Gerard Way

Time to get back into the swing of things starting with Weekly Recap! Let’s go over what happened this past week shall we?

SUNDAY Dec 2nd 2018

We already knew that Gerard would be doing a panel at CCXP in Brazil for Umbrella Academy on Saturday Dec 8th at 8pm. However, Gabriel Ba announced on this day that he and Gerard would be doing two signings. One on Saturday at 5pm and one on Sunday at 3pm. Here are the details:

On Nov 15th we got a cryptic message from Lola telling us to be excited for something coming the next day….

We didn’t have to wait long since at the time of Lola’s post it was already hitting midnight in some countries and people were beginning to post about getting it. A quick google search was able to turn up proof that a new song called Getting Down the Germs was on it’s way!

This was our third year attending NC Comicon (2015, 2016 and 2018) and every year they raise the bar and continue to make this con the most inviting and welcoming con experience I have ever had- and the best part? You get to spend three glorious days with Gerard and surrounded by incredible art and extremely talented creators. If I lived closer to this con I would go every year no matter the guest list!

So let’s get started with the recap! The con kicked off on Friday afternoon with a large crowd waiting in line eager to start their con experience!

Once through the doors we were able to check in as VIP and get our Umbrella Academy swag bags!

They also gave us a great booklet that let us know everything that was going on including a neat layout of all 6 of Gerard’s panels.

We spent our afternoon checking out the con floor and having a late lunch with some friends.

We live streamed the first panel on our Instagram, but decided against doing that for the future panels because we remembered the con had said they’d be posting full panels on their YouTube after con. (We’ll let you know when they do!)

The first panel was on “Collaboration” and featured Shawn Crystal, Becky Cloonan, Gerard Way & Tommy Lee Edwards.

Here’s the video we released from the first panel:

On Saturday morning we were up super early and couldn’t wait to return to the con!

Gerard’s first panel of the day was called “Finding Inspiration.” The panel was filled out by other amazing creators as well which include Matt Kindt, Jeff Lemire, Becky Cloonan and Tommy Lee Edwards.

And here’s our video from that panel:

The next panel we went to was for Magic Wheelchair. It was, like Gerard said, a highlight of the con. What this program does for children by designing costumes for kids in wheelchairs is just so incredibly important. We had so much fun watching these three lucky kids get the costumes of their dreams on stage! For more info and how you can help this organization please go to

And as you can see from the last pic above, we spied Gerard snapping photos at the Magic Wheelchair panel as well, which he later posted to Instagram!

After the Magic Wheelchair panel we had some free time so we decided to walk the con floor again and say hello to the wonderful creators that were there! I had my NC Comicon print with me and I really wanted Shawn Crystal to sign it so we went off to find him. After talking to him for a few minutes I got up the courage to ask him if he would sign the print with the Mother Panic symbol. For anyone who knows me (Becks), you will know Mother Panic was a comic that really helped me through a dark time, having the symbol drawn for me was really special.

Gerard’s next panel of the day was the VIP Q & A panel with Tommy Lee Edwards, Becky Cloonan & Matteo Scalera!

It was during this panel that we learned Gerard has done a cover of one song for the Umbrella Academy show. (Sidenote: You may remember at NYCC the cast of the show talked about a scene where they are all dancing to a song but they couldn’t say what song. Now Gerard is saying he’s done one song that is “integral” to a scene but also couldn’t say what song. Needless to say, we have questions!)

Our favorite part of the panel was when Tommy needed to wait for someone to bring him the questions because he couldn’t access them on his phone, so they filled the time talking about food. I want the Gerard quote of “Squash is good” on a t-shirt. You can watch all that in the video below!

Finally we came to the last panel of the day, “Find Your Voice” with James Robinson, Gerard Way, Jeff Parker and Tommy Lee Edwards.

We had a great time at this panel and were incredibly happy that Gerard was so kind to come to the edge of the stage and do a mini impromptu signing. It was great getting a chance to speak to Gerard again. I didn’t want to ask him for too much so I handed him the comic he had already signed for VIPs and asked him if he would personalize it to me. He ended up signing it again so now, as you can see above, I have a double autographed comic which I love cuz it makes me laugh. I told my friends from now on I’m just gonna keep bringing this one comic to every signing and have him just keep signing it haha.

Signing aside, the panel was really great and we had a wonderful time. Here is our video from that panel:

We also had the pleasure of sitting next to Kevin Hawkins and his daughter. Kevin was the first to shoot his hand up when they asked for questions and gave a heartfelt thank you to Gerard for how he has inspired his daughter, Lauren. We posted this clip special just for them.

Finally we ended our night the only way you can end a Saturday night at NC Comicon, by attending the Guardians of the Gala and having an NC Comicon designed beer with friends!

On Sunday we had some time before Gerard’s panels so we went back to the con floor. This time we were able to find Becky Cloonan who so kindly did a little Killjoys sketch for me that I love!

And finally we were able to track the elusive Tommy Lee Edwards down at his table where I was finally able to ask him if he would also sketch the Mother Panic symbol for me- which he did! Since Tommy is the co-creator of Mother Panic and like I said, it came out when I was going through a dark time and really helped me, it meant so so much to have the symbol drawn by him. Definitely one of my newly acquired prized possessions! (Also this now means I have a Mother Panic symbol drawn specifically for me by Tommy, Shawn Crystal, and Ibrahim Moustafa….now I just need one from John Paul Leon and my collection will be complete!)

The panels for this day were back to back. The first panel was called “Adaptation” and featured Chris Ryall, Brockton McKinney, Gerard Way and Tommy Lee Edwards.

Here is our video from that panel….I dare you to watch this and not laugh.

Finally wrapping up the con the last panel with Gerard was called “Designing D&D Characters with Gerard Way”

Since there really was no clear way to cut down the footage I had filmed at this panel that would still make sense to a viewer and the con has said they will be posting full panels I have decided not to post it. Maybe it will surface once the footage from the con comes out. If this panel isn’t included in their panels. We’ll see.

Here are some pictures from the panel though!

After the con had ended I finally had the chance to meet up with the incredibly talented creators of UNDO (Julia, Tyler Ray, Uma Akalkotkar, Joy Johnson and Lisa Schroer) and Deathwish (Joy Johnson and Lisa Schroer) and they were kind enough to give us some copies of UNDO for future giveaways!

And thanks to the incredible generosity of NC Comicon and Dark Horse we were able to procure some other pretty snazzy stuff for giveaways too!

On a personal note, and since you guys always think I’m giving away my personal collection when we have giveaways, I was so happy to be able to add these to my personal collection. The first is personalized to me by Becky Cloonan, The second is personalized to me by Matteo Scalera, and the last is personalized by Gerard.

I know my friends and I came home with some wonderful memories and had an exceptional time and I can only imagine the same for everyone else in attendance. NC Comicon is by far the most well put together and welcoming con I have ever been to and I would recommend checking it out to anyone, especially someone who is new to conventions because it is so welcoming and non judgmental.

And just like all good things, this post has come to an end. We hope you enjoyed our walk through and we made you feel like you were there!

Back in October we were thrilled to find out there would be a live stream unboxing with Gerard for his Batman and Joker black and white statues. Unfortunately, due to work, Gerard couldn’t make the event which DC Collectibles was able to film in his absence anyway.

Live Unboxing! Batman Black & White Statues by Gerard Way

Posted by DC Collectibles on Thursday, October 11, 2018

We believe Gerard was unable to attend the unboxing due to working on music since later in the evening Lola posted the video below and shortly after we started receiving news of upcoming music!

To make it up to us when the statues were released Gerard did an unboxing with us via pictures on his instagram!

What a trip! Into Gotham! The relationship I have shared with @dccomics has been nothing short of amazing, and today it hit a new height. When I was drawing the reimagined Batman characters as model sheets, I never dreamed they’d be turned into statues. Every day I think about how lucky and blessed I am to be able to make art that people support, and every day there is something (well, multiple things) to remind me of that. Today, it’s these Batman and Joker statues produced by DC Collectibles, whose amazing and talented artists it was a pleasure to work with. I believe this means they are available now! They are stunning in person. For those that don’t know, I reimagined Batman, Robin, and their villains for a series I was working on called Kingdom of The Mad. It never seemed the right time in my life to write the book, as I feel you need to be in a very specific headspace to write Batman, but I am warming up to it again, and seeing these drawings brought to life as statues definitely inspired and helped. Maybe this can happen soon? It’s definitely on my bucket list. I hope you enjoy these. They were fun to unbox and I had the perfect place for them on my shelf in the office. Special thanks to DC and the collectibles team for making this happen. Take care and talk soon. #batman #joker #dccollectibles #dccomics #gotham #batmanblackandwhite #KingdomofTheMad #batmanandrobin #Gotham

The statues are available from DC Collectibles via most places comics are sold for around $80 each, so definitely ask your comic book shop about them. They are limited edition – only 5,000 will ever be created – so be sure to get in on these while they’re still available!

On October 22nd Gerard broke the internet when he posted a small clip of a new song and promised it’s release on October 26th, 2018!

When the song released at midnight on Oct 26th we also received this snazzy lyric video!

And the always helpful Lola was there to make sure we had this handy link to be able to buy the track!

And they also let us know there was new merch that could be picked up in the G store!

Once the song was released Gerard took to instagram to let us know a few details about the song, including that Mikey Way played bass.

The song did great! It even reached #4 on iTunes Alternative chart!

And once the lyric video hit over one million views, Gerard celebrated by giving us a little info behind the scenes of the video!

View this post on Instagram

Baby You’re A Haunted House— The lyric video. We hit over one million views so I wanted to take this chance to talk about the lyric video for the song. We wanted to do something a little more special than a standard lyric video for this, so I wrote a brief treatment and sent it over to Devin Sarno (@devinsarno) at Warner Bros Records. Devin has been helping me make videos since I’m Not Ok, when we collaborated with Marc Webb, and has always been so great about making the artist’s vision the most important thing, really helping bring it to life. And I knew I wanted Claire Vogel (@oclaire) to shoot it, as she is a brilliant director. Claire is someone who worked with MCR on the Danger Days videos and I was eager for another chance to work with her. So we sent her the treatment and she went and made it! Gathering all the costumes,  and some friends who knew how to play instruments, she shot the whole thing. It came out even better than it was in my head when Mikey Way gave me the idea. When he was recording bass for the song, he said that he could picture a video like one of those old monster cartoons from the 60’s of musicians toe tapping and Beatle-bopping to the song. And I thought we should make that happen! Albeit, less of a black and white 60’s tv show and more of an old Russian tv show. So there you go. Hope you enjoyed it! #byahh Special thanks to @wbr for giving us a generous budget to make this happen!

All in all a fantastically successful song release and we couldn’t be happier to have this track added to our every playlist! Great song!

Gerard attended NYCC on October 6th and there was also an Umbrella Academy Netflix panel on the 5th.

On October 5th we were able to live stream the Umbrella Academy panel with the exception of a trailer that they played of the upcoming show.

According to our correspondent who was at the panel the trailer was:

And it was also announced that the show will air on Netflix starting February 15th, 2019!

On October 6th the day started with a signing by Gerard and Gabriel Ba hosted by Dark Horse Comics. Dark Horse live streamed the signing on their Instagram story, they said they would upload it to their youtube, but unfortunately that doesn’t seem to have happened yet!

Gerard arrived to his panel early and being the kind of amazing guy that he is, he started an impromptu signing.

NYCC requested no photography during the panel so we don’t have any pictures from the panel to show you, however, if you go to the link below from Newsarama they did a great job live blogging the event so you can feel like you were there!

And of course the con wouldn’t have been complete if Gerard and Gabriel hadn’t stopped by the Umbrella Academy photobooth to pose for this epic gif!

Leading up to the signing I thought it would be much like other signings that I had been to and expected 500-1000 people to show up at the most. Turns out I was wrong and the line for this signing was so long by the time we showed up at 9am that it was looping all through Third Eye’s parking lot and flowed on down the street.

Luckily, my friend and I had VIP passes so we still went to the front of the line and were guaranteed entry! (phew!) We were told by event staff that over 1500 people showed up and I have to believe that since once my friend and I went in to meet Gerard we stayed to hand out business cards and stickers for I had brought 700 business cards and 1500 stickers and we ran out of business cards before we could get through the line.

Once inside the store we were really impressed with how big it was. I’d never seen such a big comic shop before so I was really thrilled to look around. I was allowed to take pictures of Gerard for a few minutes so I got busy doing that and then joined my friend back in the line.

When we got up to Steve and Gerard they were both incredibly nice. Steve seemed to be quiet and maybe just a little overwhelmed by the size of the crowd, but was extremely kind and sweet to sign all of our issues of Milk Wars. Gerard, a veteran at these things by now, was his normal happy upbeat self. If he was overwhelmed by the turn out you wouldn’t have noticed.

I’ve met Gerard quite a few times and he’s always so nice to me. It had been over a year since the last time we had been face to face and I thought for sure he would have forgotten me by then, but he hadn’t. And made that clear by telling me it was great seeing me again. When I gave him the stickers and business cards for the site his reaction was an immediate “I love these.”

And he so very kindly signed two things personalized to me…

One thing personalized for each of the three girls who help me run FUN- Eva, Aliisa and Rina….

And seven things for the site for upcoming giveaways…

I had some art from my friend Aliisa to give to him and he had liked some of her art on Instagram the week before. I told him that he had made her so happy liking her art and he told me that he was going to start searching the #DCYoungAnimal hashtag on a more regular basis because he loves the art he sees under the tag by everyone.

We were so grateful to him and Steve for being so kind and generous with their time and in being willing to sign additional things for us to giveaway to all you wonderful people.

We were equally grateful to the staff at Third Eye Comics. I’ve been to many signings for G but none so organized and laid back. Most events have security strong arming and barking orders at you as you stand in line, but Third Eye had giveaways and did fun things to entertain the people waiting in line. It was an incredibly laid back and easy going atmosphere and everyone was incredibly nice. Job very very very well done. I’d come back for a Third Eye event in a second!

Below are the pictures we took from the signing. Enjoy!

If you’re like us and you can’t wait for the release of Milk Wars, the upcoming Eternity Girl series, and of course the return of our favorite Young Animal characters, then you don’t want to miss this interview!

Gerard talks a lot about what’s in store for Young Animal and gives us some insight on what it was like to create ‘Milk Wars’ with Steve Orlando and the rest of the Young Animal writers.

Today we learned through Aidan Gallagher’s Instagram that the Umbrella Academy cast had their very first table read with others, such as Gerard Way, present.

What Aidan had to say about the exchange between himself and Gerard is very sweet and we love hearing stories like this. (And it’s pretty great to see Gerard looking so happy!)

Be sure to follow Aidan, who plays Number 5 on Instagram!

Umbrella Academy will air on Netflix later this year, but to see the full cast that has been announced so far you can find that here.

And to follow the entire cast on twitter click here.

There are no upcoming events at this time.
